Email typo checker

Paste an email address to see if its domain is a big mail provider's domain with a typo. If the domain has a typo, the result shows the address with the domain fixed, and a button to check the fixed address.

We don't store the email or IP you type, or any history of your checks. But we keep the email's domain in our DNS cache for up to an hour, and a hash of your own IP address for up to 24 hours for rate limits. We also count how many checks end in allow, challenge or block each day. Details.

Which typos we catch

We look for typos in the domains of big consumer mail providers, such as Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, Hotmail, iCloud and AOL. Regional providers such as GMX, Orange, Yandex, Naver and QQ are on our list too.

  • You leave out a letter, as in gmal.com.
  • You swap two letters next to each other, as in gmial.com.
  • You hit the key next to the right one, as in gmaul.com.
  • You add a letter that repeats its neighbor or sits next to it on the keyboard, as in gmaill.com.
  • For short names such as qq.com, we fix only a misspelt .com, as in qq.con.

Before we suggest a fix, we look up the domain's mail servers. We suggest a fix only when the domain has no mail server, or when its mail goes to a temp mail service or a server that collects mail for typo domains.

The score is for the address you typed

The suggestion never changes the score or the reasons. Some typo domains, such as gmial.com, are on the public lists of throwaway domains, because they collect mail meant for Gmail. The checker marks those addresses block and still shows the fix.

Which typos we miss

  • We don't check the part before the @. We have no way to know you meant jsmith@gmail.com when you typed jsmtih@gmail.com.
  • We skip a domain with two typos in it, such as gmaill.con.
  • We skip a domain that gets mail at any other mail server, because someone may get real mail there. Mail for naber.com goes to gateway.naber.de, so we don't suggest naver.com.
  • We skip a domain that could be a typo of two providers. yahoo.cm could be yahoo.com or yahoo.ca.
  • We skip qq.co (.co is a real ending) and hotmail.co, which could be hotmail.co.uk.
  • We fix typos of the providers on our list only. We don't fix a typo of your company's domain.

A wrong suggestion sends a person to someone else's inbox, so we'd rather miss a typo.

To check an address for a throwaway inbox, use the temp mail checker. The disposable email checker page explains each check and the free API's limits.

Catch typos on your signup form

Call the check from your signup handler before you create the user. When the domain looks like a typo, the answer includes a suggestion field with the fixed address. Show the fixed address on your form as a question, and let the person correct their own address. On the Free plan you get 1,000 checks a month, with no card.
