VPN and datacenter IP checker
Paste an IP address to see if it belongs to a hosting company, a VPN provider, the Tor network or iCloud Private Relay. The result also shows which network the address is in.
To run this check on every signup, get a free API key.
5.9.0.1What our IP lists say about this address
datacenter_ip This address is in a hosting or datacenter network.
Network: Hetzner (AS24940), subnet 5.9.0.0/24
An IP address on its own gets no score. To score a signup, check its email address and IP together on the disposable email checker.
Which addresses we recognize
- Cloud and hosting networks, shown as
datacenter_ip. We list whole networks by their ASN, and single address blocks in networks that also serve homes and offices. - VPN servers of Mullvad, Proton VPN and NordVPN, shown as
vpn_ip. - Tor exit nodes, shown as
tor_exit, from the Tor Project's list of exits. - iCloud Private Relay exits, shown as
privacy_relay, from the ranges Apple publishes. - Ranges on a public list of hijacked or spam networks, shown as
hijacked_network. - ChatGPT's addresses, shown as
ai_agent, from the ranges OpenAI publishes for requests ChatGPT makes for a person.
When our routing data has the network's name and number, the result shows them, such as Hetzner (AS24940). If our routing data has neither, the result shows the /24 block the address is in, or the /48 block for an IPv6 address. If the address is on none of our lists, the result says so.
We don't check private or reserved addresses, such as 192.168.1.1.
Which VPNs we know
For Mullvad, we have the address of every server, from Mullvad's own server list. We also list the networks that Mullvad, Proton VPN and NordVPN own. NordVPN's networks carry the name PacketHub.
NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access rent most of their servers from hosting companies. We recognize those servers by their hosting network, so the result shows datacenter_ip for them.
We don't recognize Cloudflare WARP, because its addresses sit in Cloudflare's own network.
What the IP checker misses
- A VPN server in a network we don't list shows as on none of our lists.
- We leave Cloudflare, Fastly, Akamai and Google off the hosting list. Cloudflare, Fastly and Akamai carry iCloud Private Relay, and Google's networks carry Google's own services.
- We don't spot residential proxies, which send traffic through people's home connections.
To check an email address for a throwaway inbox, use the temp mail checker. To catch a misspelt domain such as gmial.com, use the email typo checker. The disposable email checker checks an email address and an IP together and gives a score.
Check the IP of every signup
Send the signup's IP address in the ip field of each check. On the Starter plan and up, datacenter, VPN, Tor and hijacked-network IP checks count toward the score. On the Free plan, you get 1,000 checks a month with no card, and we run the IP checks too. Your log lists what they found, without changing the score.
